BIOGRAPHY

My Story

Hello, my name is Kishon Webb and this is a short introduction about who I am. I am currently a third-year mechanical engineering student, with a love for logistic systems and figuring out how things work and if they work better. I enjoy playing video games and watching debates on a range of philosophical topics. I also enjoy programming simple games and doing simple puzzles like crosswords and Sudoku as well as playing the guitar. I enjoy doing tasks and watching myself improve by taking difficult tasks and finding ways to make them easier.

I grew up in a large family with 4 other siblings in Canada to immigrant parents. While I couldn’t always enjoy many of the material things of other families, my parents always made sure I had the necessities. Because of this environment, it helped me discover my passion, after joining a robotics club, for engineering and design.

After discovering my passion, it was time to choose my university and major. i eventually settled on York’s new engineering program. After,  my first year , I was torn between computer/software and mechanical because of my love of designing and programming. As is evident, I eventually chose mechanical because of its multi-faceted nature as a program would allow me to do both of my passions via the field of robotics and mechatronics.

Below is a short video detailing about more about myself.

MY ENGINEERING VISION

As a young engineer, and looking at the past, present and possible future of our world, I am struck by the lack of unity that divides the world, even as we face common problems. I think one key aspect that attracted me into the engineering field is teamwork. Although seemingly simplistic, humanity as social creatures operate exponentially better when we work together to solve problems. Weather we are creating infrastructure or improving transportation, all facets of our society operate by the interconnections of various groups working together.
As an engineer, I envision a career in which I get to work with a variety of different people to make things and solve problems. I feel that my vision is unique, in that I doesn’t focus on a any technical or hard skill. It focuses on soft skills which are the foundation of any project involving human interaction. I think that communities and companies can benefit from widening and diversifying of teams. By building up the smallest building block of production, it will hope to inspire other groups to adopt similar processes.
Regardless of the overall goal of a team, to generate profits, cleaning the environment, etc. the betterment of teamwork and group dynamics benefit the individual as well as the group. In the words of Henry Ford, a brilliant mind and engineer, β€œIf everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself."

REFLECTION

ENG 2003 - Profolio Reflction

Over the length of this course i feel that as a communicator i have grown in multiple areas. I feel i have mostly grown in two ares in particular, writing technical reports and communication to different audiences. Writing technical reports is  very important skill. The process and results of engineering work must be shown clearly and completely to allow for replication. These reports also, due to the shear amount of writing involved, allow my writing to evolve to be coherent and concise.

In terms of communicating to different audiences, i feel that my ability to discern what information to give certain audiences has improved. In addition , my formal and informal presentation skills have also improved. A good example to show this is to look at my Technical presentation vs my elevator pitch presentation. I feel that my confidence and clarity in communicating has improved as well as my ability to pick he correct information.

In the larger context of engineering, these skills will help me be a better engineer regardless of if i am writing a report alone, sharing with a college, or presenting in front of a large audience. No matter the situation, good communication skills are a must for me personally, and the engineering community at large.
