GOALS

These are goals covering a range of topics I as an individual feel i need to work on. The focus of most of these goals is my current coop position and the goals will reflect as i try to become a better employee, teammate and engineer. My goals use the SMART Goal system. A SMART goal is used to help guide goal setting. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. My goals also are grouped by one or mote related skill sets to help the orient the purpose of each goal. These skill sets are taken from the Lassonde Undergraduate competencies.

AGILITY AND ADAPTABILITY

GOAL ONE

By June 20, 2019, I will try to change my outlook on my current position as a junior tech. Having small responsibilities means I can look for new efficiencies or learn more detailed things about the job. Either way, I need to step back and look at the amazing range of opportunities this coop provides me and home in on ways to maximize my position.

GOAL TWO

By July 1, 2019, I will arrange my sleep schedule by planning for the work I have ahead. If I am working mornings, I need to prep lunches, go to bed on time, etc. before hand and not the morning of so I don’t rush. By adapting to the work, I am doing I can preform my efficiently.

REFLECTION

During my time in school and working part time, I’ve discovered that being flexible and adaptable is extremely powerful. Tying into the course material, this is similar to the fixed vs growth mindset. Being able to see new opportunities and new ways of doing things is really good to help grow as a professional and as a person.

INITIATIVE TAKING AND ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS

GOAL ONE

By July 30, 2019, have all the basics of Solidworks applications learned and attempt to take the associates exam for certification. No need to pass but being able to do a reasonable attempt is a must.

GOAL TWO

By June 30, 2019, revamp programming skills by taking some light python courses and working on a simple project with a friend. The program should accomplish a realistic task.

REFLECTION

This skill is important to me as an engineer because I need to be able to always be learning and expanding my skills and knowledge, especially in areas related to my field. Having the ability to learn and grow independently is a must have in the new technological wave and having a variety of hard and soft skills is invaluable to employers.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

GOAL ONE

            By June 18, 2019, be able to articulate what work was done in time sheets accurately and completely. I will discus with my supervisor to determining the best way of completing it and if I have any concerns.

GOAL TWO

By December 2019, be able to communicate with fellow employees appropriately. Making sure that seniors and higher ups, (manager, supervisor, etc.) are addressed properly and their instructions followed. With fellow employees, be able to address conflicts and concerns directly and able to work together without losses in communication.

REFLECTION

Communication is a key, if not essential in any profession. As an engineer, we often interact with other professionals all with varying skillsets and terminology, even within the field of engineering (mechanical, civil, etc.). Thus, it is key to be able to communicate using easy to understand yet professional language.
